6 Reasons to Love Home Newborn Photos in Charlottesville

I'm Leah!

I’m obsessed with stories of family, creativity, and simple joys.  A nostalgia nerd, educator, wife, and mom of 3, I believe life’s most fun when you’re dreaming big and having kitchen dance parties.

Highlighted family and newborn photography sessions

If you’re thinking about booking home newborn photos in Charlottesville, you might be concerned about things like:

  • what to wear
  • whether or not it’s worth the money
  • the way your home will look
  • if it will be stressful to have a stranger there with a new baby

All of these concerns are totally valid.

They are all based on some pretty big assumptions about what a newborn session is “supposed” to be. Maybe you have some subliminal messaging creaping in that you have to get dressed up or have a really beautiful, clean, white home for the photos to turn out well.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

My relaxed approach to newborn photos

I’m kindof obsessed with approaching any home newborn photos in Charlottesville with as much ease, grace, and love as possible. When priorities are aligned and the focus is on the sentiment of connection, truth, and delight of your people, stress about the experience truly melts away.

Bringing a new baby home and adjusting to that new normal can be a roller coaster of its own, so I never want to add to that. I want to make sure that all my families feel genuinely excited and at ease about hiring me for this type of session, so here are six reasons why you can take a deep breath and trust that home newborn photos in Charlottesville are a new parent’s best friend.

1. You’re in your comfort zone at home

Being photographed can be intimidating to some people and often brings up ideas about performance and anxiety. I can’t tell you how many times inquiries have come in with the disclaimer “(insert person in family) hates getting his/her picture taken.”

You don’t have to dress up. You don’t have to do extreme posing. In a casual atmosphere with bare feet, your favorite chair and any feeding supplies you need at the ready, your only job is to be present with your people and I promise to make pictures that feel both beautiful and real.

2. No need to pack up the kitchen sink for a newborn session at home

One of the best parts about having your Charlottesville newborn photos at home is that it takes so much of the pressure off that comes with simply leaving the house with a newborn.

Don’t worry about packing a diaper bag or a bunch of snacks for the other kids. No changes of clothes for everyone in case of poop or spit up.

I’ll come to you and we’ll make photos of this blurry and wild stage that will make your heart swell.

Home newborn photos allow you to stay in your familiar environment and focus on what truly matters—your growing family and the gratitude that comes when you honor a moment for what it is.

3. Newborn sessions at home are flexible

Not quite ready at the exact start time. That’s okay.

Two year old needs an emergency dance break? Perfect.

Massive blowout situation? No rush – (and the tub’s right there!).

Yes, I’ve seen it all and being at home makes all of these “situations” – not really a big deal.

Sessions typically last between 60-90 minutes, but we can take as much time as needed for your session without having to handle it all in one small studio room.

4. Your home is part of the story.

I don’t know about you, but my home changes a lot over time. We add and take away. We decorate differently or make improvements. The pictures on the fridge rotate, the kids rooms grow and change.

The books on the bedside table, the quilt thrown over the couch that grandma knitted and you curl up in every night together for story time – all of it is part of the moment now and memories later.

Whether home right now is a temporary cramped apartment with orange walls or your custom forever home, it’s part of this season and beautiful for its moment in your story. Doing your newborn photos at home in Charlottesville will help us capture these irreplaceable details that make your family’s story unique.

5. Easily include pets.

Aagain, they’re part of your story! They’re family. They’re loved and will grow alongside the little lives in your home, but not forever.

They’re just as important to get in the frame and that’s so much easer to do at home.

6. Your session will be one of a kind.

Your lives are unique, so your photos should be, too. What’s the point in making something cookie-cutter or just like you saw someone else on Pinterest?

With a home newborn session, you won’t see the same flower crown, fur blanket, or basket in your images as countless other babies.

Instead, you’ll have context around the space that will mold your child’s memories for her whole life.

Hi, I'm Leah.
Family photographer, writer, educator.

I’m  one of the first to meet your newborn baby, the one who won't judge your clothes baskets and unmade beds, and the one who can capture the way your husband looks at you with a twinkle in his eye after 12 years of marriage. I believe in honoring people and telling stories.

I believe art has the power to light up the world in dark places, starting at home.
