Relaxed newborn photos at home in Crozet

I'm Leah!

I’m obsessed with stories of family, creativity, and simple joys.  A nostalgia nerd, educator, wife, and mom of 3, I believe life’s most fun when you’re dreaming big and having kitchen dance parties.

Highlighted family and newborn photography sessions

You may think you want to schedule newborn photos at home, but logistically, it seems like it could be stressful, right? Good news – relaxed newborn photos at home are both totally possible and deliciously beautiful.

This crew had just recently moved to Crozet only a month before their third son was born. Still, these brave parents invited me in amidst all their big changes – and what a beautiful blessing it was to photograph them.

Homes hold such story, even in the early stages.

Kids artwork on the walls. The cozy blanket you wrap up in every night. That one chair with a view of the mountains where you sit to nurse your baby.

The pieces of leftover toast on the counter and shoes scattered in the entryway may feel like clutter in one moment but a reminder of life and childhood in another.

Behind the scenes of this newborn session at home

Baby was still sleeping when I arrived, so we started with some photos of just mom and dad with their two oldest sons. It felt really special to celebrate the bigger boys in some photos before baby entered the scene and helped everyone ease into a more relaxed zone as we got to know each other.

I don’t usually go into a session with a specific order of operations for what we need to do first, next, and last. So much of the flow of a session is about leaning into inspiration and energy of what is needed, especially when multiple kids and ages are involved!

Between goldfish breaks and splashing in the kitchen sink, couch cuddles and floor tickles, we photographed this whole session in 2 rooms of the house. This eased any pressure on our newborn parents to hide moving boxes or pull any other rooms together (if you’ve ever moved with kids you know how long that takes!). They sipped on their coffee and we pushed things aside to simply enjoy being present for that one hour.

These relaxed newborn photos at home are such a wonderful example of how it doesn’t have to be complicated to make heartwarming, memorable photos of your growing family.

Hi, I'm Leah.
Family photographer, writer, educator.

I’m  one of the first to meet your newborn baby, the one who won't judge your clothes baskets and unmade beds, and the one who can capture the way your husband looks at you with a twinkle in his eye after 12 years of marriage. I believe in honoring people and telling stories.

I believe art has the power to light up the world in dark places, starting at home.
